Secondary School Teacher Training Courses

Interested in training to become a Secondary Teacher? (age range 11-16/19) - Gain a PGCE and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

In School Training

Our secondary trainees are based in their first school placement undertaking classroom practice school for 5 days a week.  (Monday-Friday). Trainees typically have a long placement in the Autumn and Summer terms with the same class and school-based mentor throughout this placement. During the Spring term, trainees experience a shorter school placement; this will typically be a contrasting placement in terms of school size or demographic or behaviour policy etc.  All our trainees are placed within our fantastic partner schools both in and out of the Severn Academies Educational Trust.

Centre Based Training

School placement training is complemented and a greater depth and focus is gained, during core curriculum training. Core curriculum training takes place largely at our dedicated training centre at Stourport on Severn, however some sessions may include visits to other settings depending on session content.

Upon successful completion of teacher training, Stourport SCITT are pleased to recommend you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the Department for Education.

Expert Colleagues

We work closely with nationally identified subject specific experts and Trust Subject Leads, who deliver subject specific training in manageable sessions throughout the training programme.  We have linked subject specific focus with key areas such as developing pupils’ subject specific skills, deeper questioning, adaptive teaching, effective examination preparation and more.

PGCE

We encourage and promote the importance of working towards and gaining a PGCE. We are proud of our connections with Bath Spa University in this regard. We work closely with the university to ensure trainees are being provided with the best possible experience, so that the theory gained can be transferred into their own classroom practice. As a member of the University, the trainee will also be entitled to access their resources, such as the library, trainee services and student benefits! The university fully supports trainees by providing input on academic research and writing to help with completing an assignment at the end of each module. All of the PGCE sessions are provided in Stourport on Severn and from the comfort of your own home.
Stourport SCITT are working in partnership with Bath Spa University for the provision of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This qualification works hand-in-hand with training for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and is a critical part of the course, as schools see the PGCE element of the programme as evidence of an ability to evaluate and reflect on research and practice.
Bath Spa University’s SCITT PGCE provides structured opportunities to explore what research says about the classroom, school settings and the educational system as a whole. It makes trainees pause, think, analyse, explore, reflect and question.
The SCITT PGCE is made up of 60 Level 7 Masters credits; two assignments are completed, which extend trainees’ understanding of key aspects of education and will involve some in-depth analysis of professional practice, such that the ideas that are encountered have a direct impact on practice as developing teachers. As this is a professional qualification, successful completion of the award requires trainees to pass both assignments and achieve QTS through the SCITT. Bath Spa University’s SCITT PGCE has been designed with Stourport SCITT, so that it complements training; it is a PGCE designed for Stourport SCITT and with Stourport SCITT.
